Wired or wireless security, which is better?

There is no easy answer to this question as both styles of alarm systems have pros and cons and one setup may work perfectly in one home and be totally unsuitable for another. We've put together some information to help with your decision, however, we advise getting professional advice from your security company for your home and your specific requirements.

Wired vs wireless security

Wired security systems are hardwired to the electrical system and potentially the phone line in your building.

A wireless security system has no wires, or minimal wiring, connecting cameras, motion detectors, sensors and keypad to the building's power or phone systems. Some systems feature battery powered components and wireless communication between those components and the recording equipment, keypad and alarm monitoring system.

Installation

Wireless means fewer holes in the wall or ceiling. Some wireless systems refer to wireless communication between components which are still wired to the mains power system of your home. This style reduces the wiring needed while still supplying a constant power supply. Others setups are fully wire-free and use batteries for power.

Wireless can be a great option for homes without existing security wiring.

If your home or building already has wiring for an alarm and/or cameras your security alarm installation technician can usually upgrade or replace components fairly easily. During construction or renovation is a great time to consider a security system, a single CAT 5 cable can be fitted to provide both power and digital signal.

Performance

Signal interference can be an issue with wireless systems, having said that many wireless systems work flawlessly, however, drop-outs can happen just like in any wireless system like your mobile phone or home Wi-Fi.

Fully wireless security components, those which don't have power cables, require each item to have a battery. This is amazingly simple if you routinely replace the batteries but if you're not as organised the security system may not be working at it's best all the time, potentially leading to false alarms or missed activations.

The wireless option can be great for renters or those who would like to be able to take the security alarm and cameras with them when they sell their home.

Wired provides a reliable communication and power system but can involve extensive work to go into the initial installation in existing buildings or homes

Which is right for your home?

Both wired and wireless security systems have advantages and disadvantages, the decision of which system is right for your home or business needs to be made with your specific property and requirements in mind.
